Whether you throwing a large party or having a more intimate gathering with just a few close friends, you'll want to create a festive decor for this special time of year.  New Year's Eve is all about celebrating - out with the old and in with the new!

Here are some ideas to ensure your home decor makes your friends and family feel like celebrating.

First, decide on a theme. But before you do that, consider the types of guests you are having. It's pretty silly to have a fancy party if none of your guests likes fancy parties. But for those that do:

There are several ways to create an elegant atmosphere without spending a lot of money.
The easiest way is to create a mono or duo color theme - all white, all gold, all silver are always excellent choices, as is a black and white theme.

Removal of Wall Stickers or Vinyl Decals

We mixed the order up for this blog post a bit....  In the previous post, we showed you the new border we applied in our entryway.  But before that, we removed the Chevron stripes that were up (but never fully completed =().  Here is a picture of my girls eagerly helping...

**Caution:  Only show children how to do this IF they are old enough to know which stickers you want removed and which ones should stay up!

But I wanted to show everyone how easy the wall stickers remove.  It is a simple peel-n-remove method - just use a little fingernail grease.  You can see that no paint is taken off the wall or even stuck to the back of the wall sticker.  The paint type may change this and also how soon you applied the wall sticker after painting.  If wall stickers are applied before 2 weeks after painting, the removal CAN take paint off.

You may also use the hair blow dryer to remove wall stickers.  The heat will soften the sticker's adhesive, making it easier to remove.  **Another caution - the heat from the hair blow dryer can be HOT on your fingers too**

Patterns on the Wall... Using Wall Vinyl Stickers

Patterns on the Wall is another great way to decorate and is becoming a popular decoration theme.  Wall Decor Plus More announces a new item:  Teardrop Wall Sticker Shapes. 

We have ideas displayed here of one way to use them - to make a wall border.  Some other ways to use the Teardrop Shapes would be to use them as a stencil when you paint and remove them after.

There are 2 sizes to choose from - the ones shown are in the smaller 18pc package.  The larges ones would work great for decorating a entire wall!

The greatest thing about our Teardrop Wall Sticker Shapes is the simplicity!  Simply peel and stick them, as you like.

I found that the Teardrop Wall Sticker Shapes are a little forgiving when it comes to aligning them too.  If they aren't spaced exactly the same distance apart or in an exact level row, you can hardly notice it (which is a huge plus in my books!)

You CAN apply Wall Stickers to Textured, Knockdown Walls

We, at Wall Decor Plus More, did a test with wall stickers and rougher textured wall surfaces - this one is called knockdown texture.  We hear a lot of customer comments that they aren't able to use wall stickers for this reason.  Here are some tips and how-to's so that you CAN use wall stickers on your rough or textured walls:

1.  Purchase wall stickers that have bolder, plain print.  If your walls aren't as rough as the ones in the picture, you can get by with some cursive, script lettering; but generally the bolder, plain fonts are easier to apply.  The thickness of the lettering makes a larger sticker or more material to stick to the wall which allows it to stay on the wall better.

2.  Plan to have a lot of time and patience when applying the sticker.  If you work slowly and carefully, you CAN get the sticker applied.  The biggest challenge is getting the top tape layer off of the lettering.  Since the wall isn't a smooth surface, the stickers don't adhere perfectly.  At times you will need to place a letter by hand, if it gets moved accidentally - this is another reason why plain lettering is better than cursive, connected lettering.

3.  Firmly rub the wall sticker down with your fingers after you remove the tape.  You can see the slight curve in the "N" that came after we rubbed each letter good.  The sticker curved into a groove in the wall and that is good - you can only see it by looking very closely and it means that is stuck to the wall better.

These pictures were taken 2 weeks after the sticker was applied.  We wanted to be sure that the stickers STAYED on the wall - and they did!

DIY Gifts with Vinyl Stickers and Decals

Here's another GREAT gift idea using Vinyl Decals.  Personalize a regular container or bowl using Vinyl Stickers.

We have tested our Glossy Decals on various containers and, after a year of moderate use, we can tell you that they were still stuck down nicely yet.  We do recommend hand-washing.  (Although I do know that my sister-in-law puts hers in the dishwasher - just be certain the decals have cooled down before use - the heat will soften the decal and make the adhesive loose).

Four Things to Know About Wall Stickers

We have been in contact with a couple customers in the past weeks and this post will help clear up some confusion about wall stickers.  These customers had actually bought product from competitors and contacted us with some problems.  After visiting with them, we were able to verify the product was not ours.  One customer had received a printed sticker (#4) and was confused on how to apply since she was used to die-cut decals with transfer tape.  The other customer was removing a sticker and found it was taking off her paint.  After she sent us a photo, we were able to see it wasn't our design and it was glossy material (#2 & 3).

1.  Always take a look at the application instructions before purchase.  This will tip you off as how well the item is made.  If the manufacturer is sending you a film that you have to apply to the sticker, you need to be wary.  A reputable wall sticker manufacturer has this transfer film already applied to the wall sticker.  If you have to apply it yourself and don't have experience with this, you may have wrinkles, crooked lettering, etc that hinder how well the sticker is applied.  We see this type of wall sticker on a lot of items coming from China and Hong Kong.

2. Check if the material used is designed for Home Décor use.  Vinyl stickers had been around for quite some time before wall stickers became popular but they were used for signage.  Vinyl Stickers for signage needed to have a super strong adhesive to withstand outdoor elements and also needed to be glossy to attract attention.  Both Glossy and Strong Adhesive are NOT elements of Wall Stickers for Home Décor use.

3.  Matte finish is the best for Home Décor use as it looks like paint on the wall.  The non-shiny look of a Matte finish Wall Sticker makes it blend in with the painted surface.  All high-quality Wall Stickers are made with a Matte finish material.

4.  Verify the item is a Die-cut Decal as opposed to a printed image on plastic.  This one is the most important!  A die-cut decal has no background (ie. no yucky clear plastic stuff).  Some of the cheapest "wall decals" are not actually decals - they are just a design printed on a large plastic material.  It brings to mind a very large scrapbook sticker.  The clear plastic does not adhere well to anything except smooth surfaces and it looks tacky on the wall.

Chevrolet Pickup Custom Decals for Back Gate

Wall Décor Plus More does custom vehicle decals too!  Pictured here is one we did quite some time back and was a little challenging.  But it sure turned out pretty neat!  I can't remember the year of the pickup but a local gentleman fixed this one up and repainted it.  We completed and applied the decals in time for them to use the pickup in his daughter's wedding! 

The back gate on this pickup has indentions for each letter of the word "CHEVROLET".  We designed custom lettering, to fill in those indentions with White glossy outdoor/vehicle vinyl.

On the Blue Wall, Mom put up the Giraffe Wall Sticker Art in the 24" x 10" size in the Chocolate Brown color.  Then on the Green wall, we personalized a 12" 2-color Monogram Wall Sticker with his name.  The 2 colors used for the monogram were Chocolate Brown and Ice Blue.

Decorating your Home with Kids in Mind!

Another Great Tip for Difficult Wall Stickers

Here is a tip for you; if you have a difficult wall sticker or are applying to a rouch or porous surface. 

The difficult part usually lies in taking the top transfer tape off, once you have the sticker on the wall.  You can put off that step for 1-2 hours or more.  So you would leave the transfer tape on the wall with the wall sticker.  This will allow the wall sticker to have a chance to make a good bond with the surface before you take the transfer tape off.  It will look like the picture above, when the transfer tape is still on.
