Dorm Decor and Organization Tips

It’s that time of year again: back to school. For some, that means moving back to a college dorm. Although dorm rooms have a bad reputation for being old and cramped, that doesn’t always have to be the case! Here are some of the best trips and tricks for keeping your dorm space feeling like a happy home.
Like any living space, it’s important that your dorm makes you feel comfortable so you can relax after hitting the books all day. It’s hard to take a break when you have to make your way through a maze of furniture just to get to your bed. Small spaces can be challenging, especially when you have roommates! But if you decorate and organize a certain way, you can keep your dorm looking smart.

Step 1: Keep Space in Mind When Packing

Especially if this is your first time moving away from home, bringing too much stuff is an easy mistake to make. Dorm rooms are notoriously small, so plan accordingly! Before you bring something, ask yourself if you are really going to need it. If not, keep it in storage somewhere else.

Step 2: Organize, organize, organize

School, and especially college, is stressful. Why have your dorm room be stressful, too? An organized place is a happy place! Having a clean, organized dorm space will keep your dorm room feeling open and relaxing. The key to keeping a small dorm room clutter-free is to have a place for everything. The best way to do this is to have functional furniture. Pieces like storage ottomans and closet or over-the-door organizers will keep all your dorm stuff out of the way. Hiding things away like this will also keep your dorm space looking less cramped.

Step 3: Make it Yours

Dorm roommates can sometimes go a little crazy when it comes to matching everything. A dorm room is usually a shared space, but it is still yours. To make your dorm comfortable, make your dorm match your personality. Trying to make your room look “cool,” or trendy, or what your roommate wants might make your dorm feel less homey. You have to live there, so why not make it what you want? Coordinating a color scheme or pattern scheme with your dorm roommates can be fun, but keep it personal with your own ideas mingled in, too.

Step 4: Use the walls

Most dorm rooms have a policy against using nails or any destructive hardware on the walls, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave them blank. To hang your favorite artwork and posters, adhesive strip hooks and poster putty are your new best friends. Removable wall decals are also fun. Another dorm idea: draping a light, gauzy, calming fabric on the walls can hide the confining texture of dorm concrete walls.
Just remember to keep it simple. Cluttered walls can make a dorm room feel smaller.

Are you moving to a dorm soon and need some packing tips? Have you ever lived in a dorm and have any organization tips? We’d love to know about them in the comments section!

5 Ways to Make Going Back to School Easy & Fun

Hi all! Summer is a wonderful, even magical time of year for the kiddos. Long, lazy summer days filled with playing outside all day, swimming, going to the beach and so many more fun things! But as we all know it's already August, and stores are putting out the back to school supplies as fast as possible! I want to help the transition from lazy days to busy days to be as fun, and easy, as possible for you!

1. Host an end-of-summer party or barbeque! Turning this party into an annual tradition would help the kids look forward to school starting, and also who doesn't love a good party??

2. Personalize your child's supplies! Add their name to a water bottle, pencil case, folders. trapper keepers and more with one of these vinyl decals!

3. Talk to your kids. Ask them what has them worried or scared about going back to school.

4. Give them a special treat on the first day of school! Serving up a buffet breakfast or just baking homemade cinnamon rolls, is a tradition on the first day of school is a great and easy way to help them be ready for the new school year. Plus a good breakfast helps them to stay alert and focused in school!

5. Start a school-like routine a week or two before it actually starts. It will help make the adjustment of getting up early instead of sleeping in much easier.

How To Use A Plastic Business Card As A Squeegee

Need some tips on how to make your decal stick to the wall? Use the following method to help your decal stay on the wall!

1. Take a tape measure or level and make sure your decal is straight on the wall.

2. Using the hinge method - Take the backing off a small section of the decal; place the sticky part (transfer tape) on the wall; make sure it sticks; peel the rest of the backing off; smooth onto the wall.

3. Grab the plastic business card that came in the package with your decal.

4. Gently, but with a constant pressure, rub the card all over the decal. This will ensure that the lettering will stick to the wall and not come off with the transfer tape.

Be sure to rub the entire decal! Missing one spot, even a small one, can cause the decal to rip as you take the transfer tape off!

Have a fabulous day!

How To Throw An Impromtu 4th of July BBQ

Are you having a 4th of July party? Did you start planning weeks ago? If so, good for you! That is certainly the best course of action in order to have the best barbeque on the block! But, if you're like me, you really just started planning a party yesterday. I have some tips on how to throw a fabulous last minute barbeque that will have people thinking you spent weeks doing all the planning!

Great ideas for grilling/setting up a buffet menu - go for simple ideas with great quality! There is an abundance of fresh produce right now! Take advantage of it! Hit up a farmer's market, or just go to the produce section at the grocery store.

Or, have it be a potluck where each of your guests should be a dish to pass, whether it is for the grill, a side dish, dessert or beer and cocktails!

You don't have to go for all the expensive table accessories! Find patriotic themed items at your local grocery store, or a retail chain like Walmart or Target! Follow this guide to set up a table for cheap!

Make dessert yourself! Grab fresh fruit like blueberries and strawberries, and whipped cream and come up with something fabulous! Or follow this awesome trifle recipe!

Happy 4th of July, everyone! I hope you have a wonderful day spent with family and friends! Stay safe!

How to Apply Wall Sticker Stripes

Hello everyone! Remember awhile back when we posted a blog on how to revitalize your walls? Well, we decided to add some stripes to our walls in the entryway here in the shop! And we figured we would elaborate in this blog since we have stripes in that one as well!

Make sure to measure your space to see how many wall sticker stripes to order! Ours sets usually include 8-10 pieces. They are about 2 feet long and depending on which one you order 1, 2, 4 or 6 inches high.

Once you receive your stripes, follow these steps.

1. As with any other wall decal, you want to make sure your surface is clean. Just a damp cloth works really well!

2. Make sure to have all the necessary items ready! You might need a level, if you don't want to eyeball how straight the stripes are. (And believe me it is hard!).

3. Peel and stick. Yup, it's that simple. Watch our tutorial to see just how easy it is!

Our walls look so lovely! I think that's my favorite part about them. They make our entryway to the shop very warm and inviting!

I hope this tutorial helps you decide to add some pizazz to your walls! It's so easy and looks awesome!

Have a great day!
