New Kitchen Wall Decor - a great snowy day project

Here we are again in the middle of winter... LOTS of snow... and plenty of snow days!  Well, I kind of enjoy them!  As long as everyone is safe and sound, that is!  We usually use our snow days for something different - different routine - for sure, sleeping in, etc.  So here is what I did on a recent snow day:

NEW Kitchen Wall Decor:
My 3rd Grader with her "wonderful" reading skills, did a first read-through, "Never trust a skinny crook."  Yep, that will work too =).

This wall saying assuages my guilt at this horrible time of year when I am supposed to be losing weight and hating every minute of it!

This was the larger size of this Kitchen Wall Saying - 20"H x 16"W

It doesn't show in the photo, but I have a apple/basket/birdhouse border at the top of the wall.  The red matched perfectly with the red in the border!

The walls in my kitchen are textured boards.  Since the walls are rough, it was a little trickier to apply this wall saying.  Basically, the rougher the surface, the more patience you need at application.  So I have a few tiny spots that didn't adhere properly or may have gotten a little stretched.  But they don't show and I am positive it will not fall down.

In this spot, I will be testing how easily it is to clean.  I don't have a hood above my stove, so I know this wall area can get splattered or greasy quite easily.  But this vinyl is washable, so no worries there.  I will just need to be careful not to hook a loose spot.

Wall Vinyl Stickers/Decals on Glass ~ Using Picture Frames

Here's another idea for decorating with wall vinyl....

Placing vinyl decals or stickers on the glass of photo frames!  Most everyone has old photo frames stashed away waiting for a good use.  Or you can find various frames at the dollar stores, too.  Here's how we are going to use those photo frames: adhere wall vinyl sayings or lettering on them!

If you want a different color frame, you can take them apart and spray paint them - black is a popular and easy color to use.  You can throw away the backing of the frame.  If the backing is attached to the frame, you can add some flair by placing scrapbook paper inside as a background for your vinyl lettering or design.

Now you want to glue the glass into the frame.  I found that hot glue from a hot glue gun works best.  But you need to be quick with the hot glue as it can cool and get hard before you get all the way around the frame.  Wood glue and Gorilla glue work also but can end being messy looking.  With the hot glue gun, you can pick off the parts that show after the glue has cooled.

Now for your vinyl design.  Be sure to order the vinyl design "mirrored" or "reversed".  We will be applying the vinyl decal to the BACK of the glass so you are not pressing against the new glue job.

IDEAS:  what should you apply?  We just made the word "FAMILY" in various fonts for my sister-in-law to fit into 5x7 and 4x6 frames.  She bought the frames at the dollar store, spray painted the frames black, and inserted little screw-in hooks into the top.  The benefit of using various fonts: easy to apply as you don't have to worry as much about lining them up perfectly.  Then she ran ribbon through those hooks and attached them all to a decorative rod.  SUPER CUTE!!
Another vinyl design we applied to glass would make a GREAT baby gift.  The baby's name, date, and weight along with a cute saying.  This was in a 11x14 frame.  When you order your vinyl design from Wall Decor Plus More, you may request a box be placed around the design in the exact size of the frame.  This will make is SUPER easy to line it up straight when you are applying.  Check out the video on our website that shows you how we used this method when applying to a mirror.

After we had the saying applied, we added a few .5" dots to brighten up the black frame.  You can see the frame with no backing, when hung on the wall, has a neat 3-D look, with the lettering leaving shadows on the wall.

Be sure to contact us at walldecorplusmore@goldenwest.net if you want some design ideas!

What is so neat about Wall Vinyl Decor?

What's so neat about wall vinyl decor?

Wall vinyl is today's new hot trend in home decor. What is so great about it?

1. Wall Vinyl is SIMPLE: peel and stick wall stickers, prespaced wall sayings...

2. Wall Vinyl looks ELEGANT: embellishments that look like an expensive interior designer was hired!

3. Wall Vinyl is AFFORDABLE: a set of 50+ pc wall circles in 2 colors for $15.00 plus shipping can quite easily brighten a whole bedroom decor

4. Wall Vinyl is UNIQUE: each wall saying or name can be custom ordered to reflect your tastes

5. Wall vinyl VERY POPULAR: kids are "tickled pink" to help decorate their rooms with wall stickers and their own name!

6. Wall Vinyl will NOT HARM your walls: so simple and easy to remove (did I say affordable, too) that you could change your decor every month!

7. Wall Vinyl are EASY to keep clean: simple wipe them off right along with your walls - compared to yesterdays swags wall vinyl is AWESOME!

8. Wall Vinyl is used in MANY things: vehicle decals, house lettering, outdoor signs, business advertising/signage...

Wall Vinyl Decor ~ Adding to your Wall Photo Collage

Here is an example of using wall vinyl without putting up a wall saying.  My sister wanted to redo her portrait wall.  She wasn't so much interested in a saying, just adding some embellishments around her photo collage.  So this is the first application:
We added the top design along with a square design in between the photos.  This was done with chocolate brown vinyl. This look seemed to "boxy" and boring.  So this was where we added a few more touches to get the final product.

Here we added the vines on each side with another vinyl decal above and below the middle squares.  Definately added pizzaz to the wall!  The final product keeps the grouping balanced but the vines add an extraordinary flair.  The frames are 5" x 7".  If you were to order these items, they would be able to fit on a 12" x 24" sheet so your cost would only be $12 plus shipping!!  Place your CUSTOMIZED order at http://www.walldecorplusmore.com/.

Tutorial ~ Applying your wall vinyl design to a tile

Here is a tutorial for applying your vinyl design to a floor tile.  You can order your tile kit from Wall Decor Plus More.  Please specify in the notes that you are using the vinyl design for a tile and we will include the markings to making the application more simple for you.  Look for a design that is square - a square design can be resized to fit your 12" x 12", 6" x 6", or 13" x 13" tile.  Tiles make GREAT gifts as they can be personalized for weddings, birthdays and Christmas gifts.

Using Wall Vinyl Decals for your Camper Decor

I hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing summer!  Since it's that time of year that a lot of people are hauling their campers down to their favorite river spot or campground; let's show you how simple it is to brighten your camper decor!

Since campers are moved around a lot and thus, not so stable, having something on the walls that will not break is a priority!  Wall vinyl decals are PERFECT!  Slap them up and they look like you spent hours painting a fancy design.  You can either choose an elegant wall vinyl saying like pictured.
Or you can add some wall shapes, like polka dots or squares, to brighten the decor in a few areas.

Another option, wall vinyl stripes!  You can use the wall stripes to add a border on the wall.  Or use the variety wall stripes to decorate, say, around your table area or some similiar small area.  The wall vinyl stripes are VERY simple to use - just peel the backing and place it on the wall.  As long as you line up each strip, end to end, exactly, you can usually get by without having to measure much at all!  That's my favorite kind of decorating - no tape measure!!

Happy camping to everyone!!

5 Things you need before you apply your vinyl decal

#1.  You need a clean wall or surface!  You may use a cleanser to wash with first.  Then, be sure to thoroughly wash it with just water.  You do NOT want any soap residue left over which may take away from the quality of your adhesived backed vinyl decal.

#2.  Your surface needs to be between 60 and 80 degrees F.  For indoor walls, this is not generally a problem.  When you are applying vinyl wording to a ceramic/porcelain tile or vinyl lettering to a vehicle, you need to pay close attention to this.  I always place my tiles in front of a heater for a few minutes before I apply my vinyl wording.  If you are outdoors (such as applying vinyl lettering to your vehicle), then make use of a hair blow dryer for a few minutes to bring the surface to the correct temperature.  The correct temperature is VERY important as I have had it proven many times.

#3.  Your paint should be allowed to cure for 4 weeks to be on the safe side but in some cases one week is good enough.  If you are applying a vinyl decal over painted walls, etc, please wait 4 weeks before applying for best results.  If you apply your vinyl decal too soon, when you decide to take your vinyl decal down, the paint underneath could be ruined when you remove the decal.

#4  Along the lines of paint... applying vinyl decals over top of LATEX paint is not recommended - but I have always done it =)! It is best to use oil based paints.  But since I am not a fan of paint thinner and the clean-up needed with oil-based paints, all of my inside walls are painted with latex.  I have had decals up for over a year now with EXCELLENT results.  I am only passing this information on to keep you totally informed and I will let you judge what you prefer to do.

#5  Have the correct tools handy.  The tools you will need:
a squeegee or popsicle stick to rub over your decal
a tape measure to make sure your vinyl decal is applied straight and centered where needed (I like to use the soft tape measure like this - for some reason it works best with my 2 left thumbs).

Stay posted for more how-to's with wall vinyl decals.

Choose your color ~ getting the best contrast!

I had a customer place a 2nd order this week.  In her notes, she said "We loved the last ones that we ordered, excellent quality, fast shipping, but I should have ordered darker colors. Please send Lime Green and Ice Blue this time. Thanks -Renee".  I want to talk a little about contrasting your colors best.

Most of my vinyl colors that I have available, are BRIGHT and VIBRANT because I tend to design children's wall decor first.  Might be because I have 5 kids?  A lot of people use lighter tones for a wall color.  If you are looking to bring your room "alive", then using the bright colors that give a contrast are best.  Especially if you are working on your children's room.  I think that is what Renee is talking about - she needed more contrast between her wall color and her wall sticker shapes.  The contrast in the colors can make the difference between a wall design that "pops" or just a muted look with colors blending together.

Here is a photo of a saying.  When I was choosing colors, I really wouldn't have guessed that this combination, in this order, would not look good.
The top saying does not stand out like it should.  All you need to do here, is switch the colors around - "FAMILY" should be in the tan color and the top saying needs to be in the chocolate brown.  This is one of my most popular wall word sayings.  Here's a picture of this same thing with the color switched around.  It hasn't been applied to the wall yet, so it has transfer tape over it making it kind of hard to get a clear picture.  But you see already that the top saying is way more visible because it CONTRASTS good with the color below it.

So, as you pick out colors for your wall stickers, don't be afraid to go for the BRIGHT and BOLD.  That will give you the most CONTRAST thereby making your walls STAND OUT!  Children are just tickled pink when they get those wall sticker shapes up and can see how "COOL" their room is.  Children like the bright and bold the best.  You are more than welcome to request color samples so you can see the actual colors before you place your order.

New Ideas - My entry way!

The first official day of NO SCHOOL!!  I am SO amazed at how much I got done with 2 extra helpers around!!

Since I have been working on my entry way for close to a year now, I am finally to a point where I can share a little with you =)!  So, here goes!

I applied texture to the top tan part before painting to cover my bad mudding job (I was trying to cover up holes and such).  The bottom part -chocolate brown -had been wallpaper border.  Since I didn't feel like painting perfectly between the 2 colors, I applied a 2" strip of wall vinyl in beige color.  This was SOO easy plus saved a HUGE amount of time!  Next, I used my red circles to decorate the tan area.
Again, this was quick, affordable and easy!  Forget about $50-$100 framed prints and swags that collect dust.  I might add a few more circles yet but I'm not sure.
Next, I tried red wording on the chocolate strip.  That was my plan - wording on the chocolate stripe.  But, as you can see, the red wording didn't show up real well.
So, I decided to peel that off and go with tan wording.  I really wanted to fill the whole chocolate stripe anyway so it was a good excuse to start over.  Today, I finally got around to designing the wording and putting it up - ALL in one day!  Pretty impressive!  Anyway, I got one side of the entry way done.  I am still debating on the other side - do I want the exact same wording or a different saying but the same font OR a totally different saying and font.  HMM -lots of decisions!
So, here is what I have done so far!  What do you think?  I kind of like it, SO FAR!  I always have to look at things for a few days for a final decision.
The wording was Hermosa font, tan color and it took up 2 sheets, although I pieced together 5 different pieces so I could save on sheets of vinyl.

Gift Ideas: tiles with wording, personalized mats ~ FREE Prize!

PrizI have been working on gifts this week!  First, I made Mother's Day gifts.  That is Sunday and for the first time in history, I believe, I decided what to give, have it, and ALL BEFORE the actual day!  Our Mom's are getting a personalized tile along with a rack either for the wall or standing.
I got to say, living on the farm, the barn one turned out superb!  My husband even commented on how sharp it looked.  Generally, he can't understand the concept of wall decor and most of the time doesn't notice it at all.  I think it was the barn that got him!

Next, I had to come up with a wedding gift by the end of the week.  Fortunately, I had a day out last week and away from the busyness of 5 kids.  So at Hobby Lobby I grabbed a mat and 11x14 frame.  I personalized the mat for the bridal couple!  I continually impress myself with how NEAT it is working with wall vinyl!  To order something like this, all you need to do is buy a 12"x12" wall words sheet from Wall Decor Plus More, specify your wording, pick a font or leave that up to me.  Then, when your wording arrives, do some cutting, measuring and apply to your mat!

Now for the FREE PRIZE!!  I am working on a new section of products - the tiles.  I am curious to know if you prefer paying a lower price and putting the wording on your tile yourself OR... if a majority of you prefer your tiles with the design already applied.  SO...leave me a comment with your thoughts!  One person will receive a FREE tile - wording already applied - personalized!  Or maybe 2 people, if I am feeling generous.  So let me know your thought!  I LOVE to hear from you!!

Wall Words - picking a font!

I was recently working with a customer who wanted something to go above her doorway.  She picked out the saying: Eat smart  Play hard  Live well.  She also gave me measurements - 56" long and quite tall.  This is how I like custom orders - you provide the saying and size of space to fill.  The next step is to pick a font!  Most people don't have a clue what font they like.  So I like to show a few different variations to begin with.  After that we begin the process of narrowing it down.  Here are the 1st options I gave her: (remember, screenshots are quick designs that may need resizing yet)

If you order from Wall Decor Plus More, larger sayings may need to be cut and pieced together.  So, in a lot of cases, a screenshot may not be the exact way it will go on the wall but yet you are able to get an idea of how it will come.  At Wall Decor Plus More, we believe in saving our customers money!  By allowing the customer to cut and piece their wall art/saying themselves, less vinyl is used more efficiently.  We pass those SAVINGS on to you!  A 12" x 24" piece only cost $12 - comparable to $15-$25 anywhere else.
So, on to our customer:  Her response to these first 2 variations - "too country, contemporary - I am have more of a cottage."   I started looking at flowery fonts that remind you intricate rose buds.  Her next variation:

But, she has a mirror close to this area that has lots of intricate detail already.
Next choice:

PERFECT!  Same fancier font but without the intricate design but adding a little detail in between the words.

So, when you begin thinking about different sayings, first pick a few different sayings you like.  Next MEASURE the area you want to fill.  If you have something specific in mind, be sure to describe as well as you can OR include photos - photos ALWAYS help.
